win one million

When did someone last win one million pounds on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

While 2020 might not be the year most of us expected, someone is going to look back on this year as a defining moment in their life after this week – and it has nothing to do with coronavirus.

Why? Well, it has been confirmed that someone will soon walk away a newly-minted millionaire after going all the way in the new series of ITV’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

So just when was the last time someone won the full million on the show?

When was the last time someone won a million on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

In the 22 years since first starting in 1998, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? has only had five contestants go all the way, excluding this week’s winner.

The last person prior to the new winner to claim the £1 million prize was Ingram Wilcox, a civil servant and quiz enthusiast.

On 23 September 2006, he became the fifth person to win the top prize.

Who has won Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

The first person to bag the million-pound prize was Judith Keppel, in November 2000.

Judith was confident she knew the answer to her final question, causing an audible gasp in the audience as she risked losing over £462,000.

But her gamble paid off as she became the first ever winner of the show.

The second person to win was a high school teacher, David Edwards, on April 21, 2001.

That was an expensive year for the gameshow, as just five months later, the third person won the lot. Robert Brydges, an Oxford-educated banker went all the way on September 29.

Three years later, on April 24, 2004, Pat Bridges became the fourth person to win the top prize.

Ingram Wilcox was the fifth, and until now, last person to win as aforementioned.

There were technically six winners, but Charles Ingram – aka the Coughing Major – famously stood trial after winning the show in 2001 as it emerged that he, his wife Diana and a fellow accomplice Tecwen Whittock had plotted to cheat.

The scandal was dramatized earlier this year in ITV’s Quiz.

Charles Ingram didn’t get to keep the £1 million prize, so he isn’t included in the list of winners.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.

How to play and win

Each Play has its own Play Number – this can be found on the Game outcome screen once the Game has been finished, in the “My Games” section of Your Account.

At the start of a Play, You are presented with a splash screen displaying a ‘PLAY’ button, and the message:

You must select the PLAY button to continue. On doing so, the Game Play Window will change and You will be presented with the Main Game Play Screen, which contains four games labelled ‘GAME 1’, ‘GAME 2’, ‘GAME 3’ and ‘GAME 4’ (collectively the “Games”). In the middle of the Main Game Play Screen are four Bonus Games labelled ‘£5 BONUS’, ‘£10 BONUS’, ‘£20 BONUS’ and ‘£25 BONUS’ (collectively the “Bonus Games”, each a “Bonus Game”) You can play the Games and Bonus Games in any order.

Game 1

Game 1 consists of a box containing 4 motifs (the “Game 1 Box”). Below the Game 1 Box is the message ‘GAME 1: Find a to win PRIZE.’ You must select all 4 motifs in the Game 1 Box. On selecting a motif, that motif will animate and reveal a Prize Amount and a symbol. If, during Your Play of Game 1, You reveal a symbol, this symbol and the Prize Amount underneath it will highlight gold to indicate You have won that Prize Amount.

Game 2

Game 2 consists of a box containing three rows (the “Rows”). Each Row has two motifs (one in the ‘YOURS’ column and one in the ‘THEIRS’ column) and the word ‘PRIZE’ to the right of each Row (the “Game 2 Box”). Below the Game 2 Box is the message: ‘GAME 2: In a ROW, if YOURS weighs more than THEIRS win PRIZE.’ You must select either a motif or the word ‘PRIZE’ in a Row. On selecting a motif, each motif in that Row will animate and reveal a weight and the word ‘PRIZE’ in that Row will reveal a monetary amount (a “Prize”). On selecting the word ‘PRIZE’ in a Row, the Prize for that Row will be revealed, and each motif in that Row will then reveal a weight. If the weight revealed in the ‘YOURS’ column is greater than the weight revealed in the ‘THEIRS’ column in a Row, that Row will highlight to indicate that You have won the Prize for that Row.

If You reveal two numbers revealed in a Row that add up to exactly 10, that Row will highlight to indicate that You have won the Prize for that Row.

Game 4

Game 4 consists of a box containing 2 rows (the “Rows”), each Row containing two motifs and the word ‘PRIZE’ (the “Game 4 Box”).
