What is the Essence Music Festival?

The Essence Music Festival, also known as “the party with a purpose,” is a multi-day music festival that’s usually held in New Orleans each summer. The first Essence Festival was held in 1994 to celebrate the 26th anniversary of the monthly Essence magazine. Today, the festival features R&B and hip-hop stars from many generations.

Where is the Essence Festival?

Since 1994, the Essence Music Festival has been held in New Orleans every year but once..

Essence Music Festival celebrates all the greatest performers in hip-hop, rap, and R&B over one weekend each summer. Every year the Essence Music Festival lineup brings out the most revered R&B veterans along with the year’s breakout hip-hop stars to perform in “The Big Easy,” and you won’t want to miss the acts booked for this summer. In previous years, festival attendees have seen jaw-dropping performances from greats like Stevie Wonder, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Prince, Aretha Franklin, and many more.

It consists of nighttime concerts in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and free, daytime seminars at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. In recent years, Essence has expanded its footprint to include a free mini-festival in Woldenberg Park. Private events and parties fill other venues around town.

Very Different Essence Experience

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

I attended my first Essence Fest in 2002. I understand things change over the years, but for this to have been the 25th anniversary, it was a major let down. There were people no one has ever heard of on the main stage, mediocre acts, and delayed schedules. This is not the Essence Fest I fell in love with and I have even been questioning if it will continue to be a summer tradition for me. I’m 36, BTW.

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

This was my first, but certainly not last Essence festival trip. The shows were amazing and all the other extended events. Loved it!!

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

Concert performers were great but too much talking and commercials between acts.

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

It’s exactly what you would expect from a 25th year anniversary of the blackest event in the world.

Too Much to enjoy All or even most

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

Not my 1st or last time at EssenceFest, but I must share that there was so much going on at the same time at the Convention Center and Superdome that I was not able to enjoy everything I wanted to. Only made it to Super Lounge for one partial act though there were several performances I wanted to see. The overall layout of the festivities at the Convention Center was a similar experience where I felt like due to extremely long lines everywhere from food, services and other attractions I missed speakers and symposiums I hoped to see.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

The floor seats were too confining. The performances were great, but super-lounge acts were late to start.

EMF 25th Anniversary

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

Essence festival is an okay event to attend but it can be very costly. I would advice people to do it at least once. The concerts starts that Friday at the Superdome but there are other concerts that are at smaller venues that start that Thursday. Most of the people have already seen these artists in concert sometime in their lifetime. However, my mom and I came to the Essence Festival to hear music not a bunch commercials being played on jumbotrons. Please note this was my mom 1st Essence Festival experience. I generally come every other year. I feel as though you pay good money to see these artists and all you get is the DJ playing music. We felt that this year the Essence committee just threw the lineup together based on who was available at the last minute (they were late putting together a line-up this year). During the concerts, they were giving themselves high accolades on such a wonderful job they did this year. I will admit that they had more things going on through out the city then previous years but where did they do such a good job with it being their 25th Anniversary. Our biggest gripe was that Sunday night line-up, we felt it took away from honoring Frankie Beverly and Maze. Don’t get me wrong I liked Jermaine Durpi and Teddy Riley with friends performances but it was a no far as, they should of had Missy Elliott as their headliner and Franklin Beverly and Maze as the headliner for that Friday night. Why would you have a complete hip/hop line-up and then have someone like the legendary group Maze to come behind them to perform? Why does Essence Festival partner up with Uber and Lyft for drop-offs and pick-ups to make the people rides go a little more smoother?

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

I’ve been to numerous concerts during the EMF. I was glad to see Big Freedia, Jermaine DuPri and the Atlanta Team, Lil’ Jon, Dougie Fresh, and Frankie Beverly and Maze. There were surprises such as Nelly, Ginuwine, Patti Labelle (received an award/sang a bit). My husband pointed out to me that we can get the nosebleed seats as the gigantic screens make it possible for everyone to see at any seat. We sat in the one hundred section and I must be honest that I looked more at the screen than the stage. The cameraman needs to make sure he/she captures the entire stage instead of the same background dancer throughout the show. Overall, I had a ball.

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

I had a great time meeting a variety of black women, vendors, and entertainers.

Mercedes-Benz Superdome – New Orleans

It was a planned girls trip that we were all very excited for and was not disappointed. We wanted to do so much but weren’t able to do everything because there was so much going on at the same time and because we were exhausted from the heat. Being able to stay in the French Quarter area helped a lot when it came to going to places. But the overall experience was definitely worth the money 🙂

About ESSENCE Festival

Since its 1995 debut, the ESSENCE Festival has helped shape, define, and celebrate African-American music and culture. Held every July 4 weekend at New Orleans’ Superdome, the multi-day event initially was meant to be a one-time affair to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ESSENCE magazine.

But it proved to be such a powerful — and empowering — experience that it returned the following year, and has since grown into one of the U.S.’s biggest and most acclaimed annual festivals. “The party with a purpose” includes a stacked lineup of music’s biggest names in hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, and gospel, as well as several free panels and workshops, plus vendors focused on beauty, health and wellness, entrepreneurship, and more. It features five stages — the main stage as well as four standing-room-only “super lounges” throughout the Superdome. While you’ll need to purchase tickets to catch the music, anyone can check out the free daily activities and panels held throughout the weekend.

The first ESSENCE Festival in 1995 drew more than 142,000 people who showed up to see music legends like Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, and B.B. King perform. Fans also could attend free empowerment seminars hosted by the likes of Rev. Jesse Jackson and Cornel West.

Since then, the event has grown exponentially. In fact, the 2016 edition brought in more than 450,000 people, and it’s only gotten bigger from there. The event has been held in New Orleans every year except 2006, when it made a temporary move to Houston, Texas, as the Crescent City was recovering from the damage of Hurricane Katrina.

Throughout the years, there have been many memorable performances, like when Prince took over the main stage dressed in a wig and fake goatee in 2004, and when Beyoncé made her festival debut in 2001 with trio Destiny’s Child. She’s since stolen the show a few more times as a solo superstar.
