Biography

I completed a BA in Classics at Trinity College, Cambridge and a MSt in Greek and Latin languages and literature at New College, Oxford, where I studied Hellenistic poetry (in particular, Callimachus’ Hymns and Apollonius of Rhodes’ Argonautica), Greek metre and papyrology.

My PhD thesis looks at riddles and enigmatic language in Greek literature. This is partly a study of the riddle as a literary form, both as self-contained poems called aenigmata or griphoi and as poems which appear prominently in dramatic or narrative works (for example, in Sophocles’ Oedipus the King and Achilles Tatius’ Leucippe and Clitophon), and partly a way of approaching the more general ideas of allegory and allusion with which riddles are connected.
