Today we had a citizen bring in a letter and a check they received stating that they had won the “Supermarket Customer Sweepstakes Raffle Drawing”. In the envelope was a check in the amount of $8,998.80. The check appears to be an official check from Trans Insight. In the letter it states that they have won $880,000.00 and after they cash the first check and pay the $7,798.00 in processing fees/clearance fee, they will receive the remaining amount of $871,002.00.
If the person would have cashed the check and sent the money they would have been responsible for the amount to the bank because the check is fraudulent.
Be aware if it looks to good to be true, it is!

SUPER-MARKET SWEEPSTAKES SCAM REPORTED
A new snail-mail letter scam is being reported across the region. Some residents are reporting the letters are sent from Clear Vision Corporation Inc., stating they have won a “supermarket customer sweepstakes raffle draw.” Many people could easily be drawn in by the letter’s claim, but take note: raffles are illegal within the state of Tennessee. The letter is typed on letterhead with the “corporation” name and a check enclosed for the “first payment” of the prize money. Names of nationwide grocery stores are included in the letter as being “participants”. The letter also states that if customers use their credit cards at participating stores are selected and registered for the drawing. In this particular scam, a fake check is enclosed with the letter, asking the recipient to cash the check, mail back a portion for the professing fee, and keep the rest. Several days after the check is cashed, the victim sees the funds depleted from his/her bank account when the bank determines the account from which the check has been written has insufficient funds or does not exist. Please, do not fall for such scams and report any such letters to local authorities.
