Tigard couple wins $1 million Mega Millions jackpot

A couple in Tigard is celebrating this week after winning $1 million in the Oregon Lottery.

Venessa Ottinger was in shock as she read the numbers on her winning Mega Millions ticket and handed it over to her husband, Craig, who confirmed they had won the prize, the Oregon Lottery said.

The Ottingers’ ticket had five matching numbers but not the Mega Ball number. If they had matched the Mega Ball, they would have won $77 million.

The win was perhaps less of a surprise to the store that sold the ticket. The King City Liquor Store has had other big winners: It sold a $8.5 million ticket in 2018 and a $23 million ticket in the 1990s, store owners told the Oregon Lottery.

The lottery pays retailers that sell winning tickets a bonus equal to 1% of the prize money, up to $100,000. The liquor store should receive $10,000 for the Ottingers’ winner.

Mega Millions is a multi-state game played across the country, selling tickets for $2 apiece. Since 1985, the Oregon Lottery has paid players more than $38 billion in prizes and transferred more than $12 billion to public programs, according to state officials.
