number 27 on the ravens

The reason JK Dobbins will wear No. 27 with Ravens

JK Dobbins appears to be in the right offense in the NFL. The Baltimore Ravens drafted the former Ohio State Buckeyes star in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft with the No. 55 overall pick.

Dobbins wore No. 2 at Ohio State and single digit numbers are not allowed for running backs in the NFL so Dobbins had to go in the 20s. Dobbins will wear No. 27 with the Baltimore Ravens.

Speaking with the Ravens team website, Dobbins revealed the reasoning for choosing 27 as his jersey number.

“I always wore it in pee wee football. It was my dad’s number ,” Dobbins said , via the team’s website. “So the reason why I wear No. 27 is to honor my father.”

Dobbins’ father passed away when Dobbins was just 15 years old, so choosing his father’s old number is a touching tribute as he starts his pro career.

In the pros, Dobbins will go into the backfield with former Alabama Heisman trophy winner and veteran NFL running back Mark Ingram, as well as budding superstar quarterback and 2019 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson.

In John Harbaugh’s offense, the Ravens are predicated on running the football a little bit more than most teams in the modern, pass-heavy NFL.

Dobbins had a monster junior season after taking a bit of a step back as a sophomore, rushing for 2,003 yards and 21 touchdowns while contributing in the passing game as well with 23 receptions for 247 yards and two more scores. Since Dobbins hit the dreaded 300-carry mark last year, it might not be a bad thing for his long-term durability to have a smaller workload as a rookie in a complementary role.

Ingram joined NFL Network during the NFL schedule release special earlier this month and talked with Colleen Wolfe about what Dobbins brings to the table immediately.

“I like the young boy,” Ingram said. “I’ve been following his game for awhile. I like when he touches the rock for sure. He reached out to me. Right after he got drafted, he shot me his number, (he) said he’s looking forward to getting to work. I said, let’s go get a ring. (I’m) trying to go win a championship. I like his mindset, I like his attitude, I like the way he runs the ball. To bring him and his talents to our room that’s already special, our backfield is going to be the best in the league for sure. We are looking forward to him joining the team and helping us win a championship.”

Pro Football Focus is high on Dobbins , including one analyst picking him to be the offensive rookie of the year.

“I’m focusing on JK Dobbins of the Baltimore Ravens,” PFF’s Eric Eager said. “He might’ve been picked a little but too high but he’s going into an offense where they’re going to be winning a lot of games. He’s going to get a lot of carries and we already know Lamar Jackson is going to make life easier on the running back because of his strength of running from the quarterback position.”
