The Mississippi Lottery
Previously, The Mega Millions and Powerball lotteries were available in 44 states, as well as Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mississippi was one of six states—along with Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah—that banned the lottery.
Mississippi originally objected to the lottery due to the state’s religious beliefs, which is why Alabama and Utah ban the lottery. The state also banned the lottery to protect its riverboat gambling industry, which is also why Nevada doesn’t allow the lottery.
But on August 31, 2018, Mississippi authorized the lottery and established the MLC, allowing its residents to play scratch-offs and take part in the national lottery.Scratch-off lottery tickets initially went on sale in Mississippi in November 2019, with four original games.
