Lucky numbers: 50 people pick winning digits in 1 Mass Cash Lottery drawing

BOSTON (WHDH) – Five numbers made 50 Massachusetts residents very happy on Sunday night.

Sunday’s Mass Cash Lottery winning numbers — 9, 15, 3, 27 and 21 — were picked by a whopping 50 people, lottery officials said.

“Fifty is the all-time high,” said Mass Lottery official Christian Teja, who noted all of the winners actually chose their numbers instead of relying on Quick Picks. “We had 34 back a number of years ago and 10 to 12 from time to time, but 50 is the one to beat.”

The five numbers appear in a vertical line on the betting slip, Teja said, which may have led to their popularity. And they also line up with several patterns, he said — they are all multiples of 3, and are all six numbers apart.

The number of winners meant their prize money was cut to $48,000 apiece. Teja said the Lottery uses a formula to reduce the price from $100,000 when a large number of people win, and here the winners stretched across Massachusetts.

“We’re talking all across the state, from Barnstable to Brookfield, Easthampton to East Boston, Ludlow to Lawrence,” Teja said.

Some people wait a lifetime to win the lottery. Other win and never know it.

The Massachusetts Lottery announced on Wednesday that four winning Mass Cash tickets from 2019 were never claimed.

Each of the prizes is worth $100,000. They are set to expire in September and October if the winners aren’t identified.

The first two prizes were purchased from the Dedham Convenience Store on 69 Cedar St. in Dedham for the Mass Cash game on April 14, 2019. The winning numbers were 05-06-11-23-26.

The second winning ticket was sold at Big Y at 503 Memorial Dr. in West Springfield. The winning ticket for June 5, 2019 was 08-21-30-32-34. The final location of an unclaimed ticket was at a Shell station at 509 Main St. in Wakefield. The October 16, 2019 winning draw was 02-15-18-32-33.

The final day to claim the prizes won in April and June 5 is Sept. 30. The last day to claim the prize won in the October 16, 2019 is Oct. 16.

Lottery prizes that expire become part of the net profit that the Lottery returns to the state for distribution to all 351 cities and towns.

Prizes can be claimed at Lottery claim centers located in Braintree, Dorchester, New Bedford, Springfield, Woburn and Worcester.

Mass Cash drawings are conducted seven nights a week with a cost of $1 to play. Players must pick five out of 35 numbers or choose Quic Pic, which randomly picks the five numbers for you. Players who match all five winning numbers selected in the drawing win a $100,000 prize.
