The Indiana Bar Exam is a 2 day exam. Day 1 consists of two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions and a 6-question, 4 hour essay exam (Indiana Essay Exam). Day 2 is the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam.

Administrative Law, Agency, Commercial Law, Indiana Constitutional Law, Corporations, Family Law, Partnerships, Personal Property, Pleading and Practice, Taxation, Trusts & Estates, Wills, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Constitutional Law, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts.

What’s the minimum score for MPRE?

A scaled score of 80 on the MPRE within two years prior to or after passing the Indiana Bar Exam is required for admission. See our MPRE Study Guide here.

How is Indiana Bar Exam scored?

The MBE is weighted 50%, Indiana Essay Exam is weighted 30%, and the MPT is weighted 20%. The scores are scaled and combined to determine if a passing score of 264 was achieved.

When are Indiana Bar Exam results released?

Results are released 75 days after the bar exam.

Can I transfer my MBE scores from another jurisdiction?

Applicants can transfer MBE scores from a concurrent exam only.

What about IN Bar Exam reciprocity?

Conditional one-year licenses granted to attorneys who have practiced 5 of the 7 years preceding application and who intend to practice predominantly in Indiana. After fifth consecutive renewal, admission becomes permanent.

Indiana Bar Exam Information
The Indiana Bar Examination is administered twice each year:

  • on the last Tuesday and Wednesday in February, and
  • on the last Tuesday and Wednesday in July

Deadlines and Fees
Application must be postmarked by November 15 for the February exam and by April 1 for the July exam. Will not be accepted before October 1 for the February exam and February 1 for the July exam. Indiana Bar Exam fee: $250. Late filing (with additional $250 fee) allowed 15 days past deadline.

Format
The Indiana Bar Exam is a two-day exam held in Indianapolis. Day 1: Two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions and a four-hour Indiana Essay (IE) exam consisting of six questions. Day 2: Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a six-hour 200 question, multiple-choice exam.

Grades and Results
The Indiana Bar Exam will be weighted: MPT 20%, IE 30%, MBE 50%. The passing score will be a combined scaled score; 264 is required for passing. Normally, results are released 75 days after the exam.

The Multi-State Professional Responsibility Exam

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is a 60-question, two-hour-and-five-minute, multiple-choice examination administered three times each year. The passing score for the MPRE is a scaled score of eighty and must be achieved within two years before or after the date the applicant successfully takes the Indiana bar examination.
