Diane Bate, 70, was suspicious but repeated checks confirmed she had won the £3.8million top prize in the December 12 Lotto draw by matching all six main numbers. The former social services worker, married to Michael, revealed: “I checked my ticket early on Sunday morning using the National Lottery app. When it made a funny sound I looked at the amount and couldn’t quite believe my eyes. The most I have ever won before is £100. “I must have checked it about six times in total before I started to believe it was real and at that point I was physically sick!

“The feeling of winning the lottery doesn’t even compare – I am on cloud nine!”

Diane, of Rhyl, North Wales, said retired HGV driver Michael, 74, “wasn’t happy” at being woken up to help check her ticket, but added: “We’ve been married 52 years so he soon got over it.

“I called my daughter and she thought I was kidding. I then called my grandson and he didn’t believe me either.”

She plans a modest treat for herself while the couple will swap their threebedroom bungalow for a bigger house and help the family.

“We want to buy a bigger house locally as we love the area, but we don’t want a mansion or anything flashy.” They will also travel when they can, taking in the US, Canada and Australia.

Diane said: “Michael has suffered from ill health recently so this is a real pick-me-up for the both of us. Being able to help out our family brings us so much happiness. It isn’t just a win for me, it’s a win for them too.”

A Queensland grandmother discovered she won $1 million on Christmas Eve after holding on to the ticket for more than a week as she prepared for Christmas.

She had won the total division one prize in the Monday and Wednesday Gold Lotto draw on Wednesday December 16, 2020 but didn’t discover her luck until the day before Christmas.

“This is the best Christmas ever! I don’t need a Christmas present now. This means the world to me and my family,” she said when she finally discovered the news.

“I just didn’t get the chance to check my ticket as I always do. You should always check your entry!” she said.

“When I found out I had won a million dollars, I just had the shakes. I could barely talk. I just started crying. My family didn’t know what was going on.”
