Victoria Derby Results 2020
The Denis Pagan-trained Johnny Get Angry ($21) has claimed the $1.5 million Victoria Derby at Flemington, in a fairytale story for football coach-turned-trainer Denis Pagan and apprentice jockey Lachlan King.
Johnny Get Angry settled more forward than he had in recent starts, and the Tavistock gelding was fit enough late to stave off the Matt Cumani-trained Hit The Shot and Derby favourite Young Werther in the 2500m affair. At the 200 metre pole Johnny Get Angry hit the front and fought hard to salute by a length margin on the line. The race time was 2:41.91.

---|---|---|---|
1st | Johnny Get Angry | Lachlan King | Dennis Pagan |
2nd | Hit The Shot | Fred W Kersley | Matt Cumani |

The big three-year-old chestnut was ridden by jockey Damien Oliver and it paid $9.50. The winning margin was 3.25 lengths to the 2nd horse Southern Moon trained by Mitchell Freedman. The Ken Keys trained Soul Patch was a further length away finishing 3rd. The race time was 2:40.83.
Finish | Horse | Jockey | Trainer |

Victoria Derby Results 2018
Remarkably, it took until 2018 for master Victorian trainer Darren Weir to have a runner in the Victoria Derby. But in typical Weir style, he made his long-awaited first effort count, winning the race with Extra Brut.
In a fast-run Derby that proved too tough for many competitors, Extra Brut charged ahead in the straight to establish himself as the superior young stayer, with jockey John Allen timing his run nicely.
Stars Of Carrum and Chapada filled the minor placings, while race favourite Thinkin’ Big couldn’t go with the stronger types and fell away in the straight.
Finish | Horse | Jockey | Trainer |
---|---|---|---|
1st | Extra Brut | Darren Weir | John Allen |
2nd | Stars Of Carrum | Robbie Laing | Ben Melham |
3rd | Chapada | Michael Moroney | James McDonald |

Already a Group 1 winner in the Spring Champion Stakes, Ace High proved himself a champion three-year-old with victory in the 2017 Victoria Derby.
While the Spring Champion was a start-to-finish leading effort, Ace High had to do things different in Derby, being posted back and wide under Tye Angland. The star’s versatility was on full display as he raced clear in the straight to score by two lengths from Sully in second, with Astoria back another half-length in third.
Trainer David Payne combined with loyal owner John Cordina with the winner.

In an amazing achievement for the Cummings racing dynasty, in 2016 James became the fourth-straight generation of the famous family to win the Victoria Derby, saluting with Prized Icon.
Cummings’ great-grandfather Jim won the Derby with Comic Court in 1948, while his grandfather Bart won the race on five occasions. His father Anthony won with Fiveandahalfstar in 2012.
Cummings was unsure about running Prized Icon in the race after a poor prior running, but his decision to proceed proved to be inspired.
Jockey Glyn Schofield produced a well-timed ride to defeat favourite Sacred Elixer, who finished second, and Inference in third.
Finish | Horse | Jockey | Trainer |
---|---|---|---|
1st | Prized Icon | Glyn Schofield | James Cummings |

The Chris Waller-trained Preferment caused an upset in the 2014 Victoria Derby, overcoming hot favourite Hampton Court who endured a horror run.
Preferment, the first Derby runner for champion trainer Waller, took advantage of Hampton Court’s misfortune to take out the nation’s premier three-year-old race.
It was a remarkable fifth Victoria Derby triumph for champion jockey Damien Oliver.
Topweight Hampton Court was sandwiched between runners just after the start and had to work hard to make up ground throughout. He would hit the front briefly before being swallowed up by the chasers, of which Preferment proved the best.
Finish | Horse | Jockey | Trainer |
---|---|---|---|
1st | Preferment | Damien Oliver | Chris Waller |
2nd | Bondeiger | James Winks | Danny O’Brien |
3rd | Nozomi | Dwayne Dunn | Anthony Freedman |

Ridden by champion hoop Hugh Bowman, Polanski hit the front early in the straight and stayed the 2,500 metre journey in strong style, saluting from Complacent (trained by Peter Snowden) in second place and Thunder Fantasy (Anthony Cummings) in third.

Trainer Anthony Cummings was unsure about running Fiveandahalfstar in the 2012 Victoria Derby, with the gelding have run only seven days earlier. But after a midweek trackwork gallop, jockey Damien Oliver set about persuading the trainer to take the punt – and succeeding in his mission.
It proved an inspired move, with the three-year-old taking out the time-honoured Group 1 race at long-shot odds of $41.
Cummings continued a remarkable family love affair with the race, which his grandfather Jim won as a trainer in 1948. That was followed by his champion father taking home the Derby trophy on five occasions across his glittering career.

Victoria Derby Results 2010
The 2010 Victoria Derby was a triumph for the Kiwis, with Lion Tamer saluting for New Zealand father-and-son training combination Murray and Bjorn Baker.
Set for the Derby earlier in the year after a strong Listed win in Auckland, Lion Tamer repaid his handlers’ faith with a stunning win to cap a masterful training performance. The eager, excitable colt was calmed down with several gear changes, and showed his inherent class in capturing Australia’s classic three-year-old event.
Second place went to Praecido, trained by David Payne and ridden by Craig Williams, while Retrieve took third place for Kerrin McEvoy and Peter Snowden.

---|---|---|---|
1st | Lion Tamer | Hugh Bowman | Murray & Bjorn Baker |
