LA Kings preview: 4 key factors to the season

How the Kings fare will depend on veterans – especially Drew Doughty – younger players and a revamped division

While the Kings have been quietly discussing their chances to return to the playoffs during their training camp, virtually every prognostication, simulation, betting odds and other projection has them missing the postseason for a third consecutive year.

What will it take to reconcile internal and external expectations and defy the experts?

Becoming a more efficient team within Todd McLellan’s speedy system will be a key, as last season the Kings frequently outshot opponents but much less frequently outscored them. They accumulated the third-most shots on goal in the NHL, but finished 30th in goals scored

Defensively, they made considerable strides, according to McLellan as well the team’s veterans. Individual players who were thrust into duty early in the season appeared much more comfortable toward the end of the campaign, which factored into a seven-game win streak to close last year’s truncated season.

Now, they face the challenge of having an even younger roster than the past two seasons and seeing two of the top four Stanley Cup contenders – the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights – for 16 of their 56 games, as well as the 2019 champion St Louis Blues.

Here are four key factors to the Kings continuing to move the needle in 2021.

Rejuvenated veterans

Hockey is no stranger to stoppages, having been through lengthy labor disputes in 1994-95 and 2012-13, and having lost a full season in 2004-05. In those cases, the extra rest helped resuscitate and extend the careers of some veteran players.

While 24 of the 31 NHL franchises returned to play during the summer, the Kings were one of seven teams that had been off since March. With center Anze Kopitar, goalie Jonathan Quick, defenseman Drew Doughty, winger Dustin Brown and forward Jeff Carter all having logged considerable mileage, the down time was welcome.

Carter underwent core muscle surgery in June. He’s one of several veterans on the seven non-playoff teams, such as former King Wayne Simmonds, who was optimistic about how improved health could help turn around his play in a league that gets younger every year.

Kopitar was the Kings’ only 20-goal scorer last season, and limited offense created a narrow margin for error. A boost to the core of the Kings’ roster could give them a bit more breathing room.

Still elite or falling off?

Among those veterans is Doughty, one of the most accomplished defensemen in hockey history who is under contract for seven more seasons at a cap hit of $11 million per season.

While Doughty still has the mobility and vision that separated him even from some other elite defensemen, losing at this level has taken a toll on him. He has been a player who thrived with high stakes, but the Kings have had little of significance to play for over the past two seasons. During those campaigns, his possession numbers have been career worsts, and he skated to a combined negative-50 rating after posting a plus-93 in his career through 2018. His power-play production also dipped from 24 points in 2018-19 to 14 last season..

Yet the Kings saw players like Matt Roy become dependable defensively and traded for Olli Maatta, a veteran left-shot defenseman with whom Doughty had some familiarity. The stability of a veteran partner who can play a stay-at-home game could liberate Doughty of some grunt work, as was the case in Calgary when a change of partner elevated Mark Giordano’s game back to Norris Trophy heights in 2018-19.

Another positive sign is that when placed in competitive situations, Doughty still prospered. During the Kings’ seven-game surge to finish last season, he compiled a plus-five rating and five points, including two on the power play.

Ready for primetime players?

Center Quinton Byfield and winger Arthur Kaliyev made their training camp debuts Monday, each scoring off passes from Doughty early in the session.

But Kings fans should not expect the very biggest names in their prospect stash to hit the ice for the big club this season, at least not beyond the seven-game maximum for players to conserve their full entry-level contracts. General Manager Rob Blake has been clear that he is taking the long view toward developing the roster and individual players alike.

But the Kings may still have some exciting rookies on the roster, including center Gabriel Vilardi. A 2017 first-round pick whose long road to recovery from a back condition appeared to have slowed his development, he contributed seven points in 10 games toward the end of last season. He then bulked up over the long offseason.

Defenseman Mikey Anderson and forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan are two other rookies who appear mature enough to chip in at the top level. Both were lauded by scouts as high-character players, the type that the Kings had with players like Matt Greene and Jarret Stoll in their glory years.

How stiff is the competition?

Realignment for the modified 2021 campaign brought three new teams into the division: The Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche. That’s not great news for the Kings as the Avalanche were conference finalists last season despite battling injuries nearly from start to finish. They are Stanley Cup favorites on most betting odds sites. The Blues stumbled in last year’s playoffs but had a magnificent regular season, one of the most impressive title defenses in recent memory after winning the Cup in 2019.

Vegas, which remained in the Kings’ division, has the third-shortest odds at the Cup after Colorado and the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning. There are no certainties in hockey, but one could feel comfortable at least penciling in Colorado, St. Louis and Vegas for three of the four available spots in the West Division.

That leaves the Kings, Ducks, Wild, San Jose Sharks and Arizona Coyotes to compete for the final playoff berth. While it is a crowded field, it may not be an impossible one to rise to the top of this season.

The Sharks and Ducks jockeyed around the bottom of the Western Conference last season, and neither was particularly active last season. The Sharks have been forced to start their season in Arizona and may play there for the foreseeable future. That sort of relocation has not boded well for teams in other sports, such as the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, who have struggled to find their footing in their temporary home in Tampa Bay.

The Sharks are joined there by the Coyotes, one of three teams that will allow fans into the stadium. The roughly 25% capacity won’t look too much different from your average home game of years past in Arizona, where the Coyotes have struggled to drum up enthusiasm. Lastly, the Wild are a team not unlike the Kings, as they have been forced to balance the hefty contracts of veterans like Ryan Suter and Zach Parise with the development of more recent arrivals to their organization.
